Frankenstein’s Fallen Angel&Frankenstein “Why mankind is not always kind”

When we talk about mankind, people always think about human, which is it surface meaning, but as my point of view, we are called mankind is because we are kind, I’m not talking about as now we are all good people, but I believe that as we were born, as our life began, we are all kind-hearted. So the question is that, why we changed? Why people commit a crime? Why the number of people in prison is more and more day by day? Is it because we are educated that way as we growing up? I think the answer is negative, what changed as is what we had experienced and how we were treated. In the novel, “Frankenstein Third Edition” by Mary Shelley, the writer shows us a story to prove that what we have been through changes our life and she also use lots of literary devices like simile, foreshadow and symbol to help reader have a better understanding.

Victor Frankenstein is a nice gentleman who interested in science and looking a way to bring the life back to the dead body, he did a lot of experiment and finally find a way to make it, so he collected every part of body from dead people and combine them together, then he shock the body by electric from the thunder, and he made it, he give the dead body a new life, just as an newborn body. But victor feel terrible feel terrible about his creature, as we can read in the novel, he said:“How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form? His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful!-Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; “(Shelley 83) We can know Victor’s feeling from the word “catastrophe”, he compare his creature as a very terrible thing ,I was really wondering about that when I was reading because in my opinion he should be really excited and happy when he saw that creature was back to life, because that is what he is working on all the time, but now when he saw the ugly appearance, he was scared and run out of the lab. From the details he shows us about the creature’s appearance, we could know that how he disgust about it. In this chapter we could know the first attitude of Victor to the creature, also the writer use simile and foreshadow to show us how victor feel and also bedding the murder later.

After that day Victor left the creature in the lab and ran away, he thought the creature as a monster and never tried to find it until his brother got murdered. He clearly know that the murderer was not the maid but he can’t save her from death, after that, Victor wants to revenge. Later when they met again, Victor try to kill the creature but the creature ask him to come with it and wants to tell Victor what he had been through after he left. In this chapter, the creature’s good deeds impress me a lot. “I discovered also another means through which I was enabled to assist their labors. I found that the youth spent a great part of each day in collecting wood for the family fire; and, during the night, I often took his tools, the use of which I quickly discovered, and brought home firing sufficient for the consumption of several days ”(Shelley 128) I had to say that when I read this chapter I was moved by what the creature did, just as a kid, who has no hate or harm or any negative feelings but kindness, they are mentally nature and clean. When the creature saw that the young couple was busy about their life day by day, he tried to help them, also he didn’t plan to let them know who did that for them, all he want is help them without disturb, this is irony because Victor treated it as a monster but in fact this creature is kindness, nobody taught him to do that but he did that by himself, that’s his nature and he is giving instead of taking.  So is the creature a real monster? I don’t think so, so why victor hate it so much, only because it is ugly? I think one more reason is because he was disappointed, not by the creature, but by himself, he means to create a beautiful, wonderful life but when he saw his work he just can’t accept it, that’s why he wants to destroy it as it has never been created, but it was not the creature’s fault, it had no choice of its appearance, we all know parents love their children more than anything else, so if Victor had a baby with his lover and once he saw his child is looks ugly, will he throw his child away immediately? I think the creature is the child of him and what victor should do is try to look after him and teach him as a normal person, if he do that at the beginning I don’t think there won’t be murder later.

From another side, in “Frankenstein’s Fallen Angel” by Joyce Carol Oates. It talks about the creature’s view when he first come to the world and also how it’s view was changed. At first, the creature thinks the world will accept him “He relates himself with Adam, except so far as Adam had come forth from God a ‘perfect creature, happy and prosperous.’ (Oates, 544) just as I said, the creature hopes it can fit the world, can get along with the people around him, he is hoping a better life, which shows as we were born, as our life began, we are all kind-hearted. But the at the end, everything changed, “Finally, of course, he identifies with Satan: ‘I am thy creature: I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed. Everywhere I see bliss, from which I alone am irrevocably excluded. I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous.’ (Oates, 544-545) the creature begins to change to a monster even though he doesn’t mean to do that, but the things around him, the people around him, also it’s creator seems him as a monster, which leads him to totally becoming a monster

  1. Victor’s desire for knowledge led him to create this creature that goes beyond science but it approaches God’s power that proves he is able to give life. God created Adam and then, God created Eve from one of this ribs. However, God never abandoned them. God punished and expulsed them from the paradise for disobeying his order. This is the same case with respect to Satan that was his most beautiful angel created for him in heaven. God punished this evil angel because Satan rebelled against God. On the other hand, Doctor Frankenstein became afraid and scared of his creation who was kind and was unaware of the world and society mind. Later, Victor abandoned him and left him to his luck.
Life can only be created by God’s image or simply nature. Doctor Frankenstein became the real monster by creating and giving life to something that doesn’t look perfect for humankind. Also, he feels remorse and guilty for playing god roll. In contrast, the creature was not a monster in the very beginning, but he turns into one after he killed Victor’s relatives. Society and its reject made him a monster. After the creature committed all these crimes, he compares himself to Satan and he decided it’s better to die.
I’m wondering if Mary Shelley was religious or atheist to bring this thought that a human being can be able to create life.

  2. I believe that Victor hated his creature because he could not handle such a monster that he created himself and maybe didn’t realize how much responsibility he would be. Also, maybe he does not like the way he looks? He might have been terrified by the sight of him and knew other would be too. Ultimately Victor decides to abandon the monster. Maybe this could be the start where Frankenstein is the actual monster? The creature starts to destroy everything in Victors life because of the pain Victor caused him. Victor does know deep down that he does hold some (not all) responsibility for the deaths, and the destruction the monster caused.

  3. Victor hated his creature because he considered it a failed experiment and a threat to the human race. What lead Frankenstein to become a real monster is the fact that he never had anyone who truly loved him. He wanted acceptance, but in a world where everyone he encountered would consider him an abomination, love was impossible to find. Frankenstein chose to die at the end of the novel because he felt he would be better off dead than living a life devoid of love and meaning.

  4. Victor Frankenstein is the true monster in this novel. He loses his morality in search for power and notoriety. Victor’s God complex is what makes him monstrous. He is going against natural causes and trying to become the judge on who lives or dies. He committed a sacrilegious act, by digging into graves to excavate dead body parts. The parts that were excavated belonged to another human, who probably has family grieving for him or her. Victor in his nearsightedness, totally disregarded the empathetic nature of humans for his own selfish needs. What is even more monstrous, after he bought the Creature to life, he rejected it and ran away with out facing the problem face on. What parent abandons their own child? In most societies, parents like Victor are severely admonished.

Victor doesn’t hate his creature, he fears is. The monster is shrouded with mystery. People fear what they do not understand. Victor was very intelligent as it was seen through his study. After Victor brings his creation to life, from this point on Victor is in uncharted territory. Victor had no idea of the Creature’s intentions are capabilities. On top of the fact that Victor made his creation of deceased corpses, Victor is scared for his life.

  5. I believe that Victor hated his creation because he was not able to control it. He was responsible for a creature that was capable of great danger. Instead of caring for the creature, he neglected it and did not provide the nurture and love that the creature searched for. This may have led to the unfolding of the creatures evil side. In my opinion, if Victor did not hate his creation, it may have been beneficial to himself and to society. Frankenstein chose to die because he was not able to live with himself. He was hurt that his actions lead to the death of Victor and several others. This alone demonstrates that his character was emotional and was capable of love. it is difficult to classify the creature as evil because he did not enjoy harming others. He simply did not know any better, and felt neglected by his creator and society.

  6. Despite successfully creating life, Frankenstein hated his creation because of it did not fit into his imagined, idealized outcome in his experiment. The physical appearance of the finished monster was repulsing to him. He saw the finished product as a monstrosity and immediately began regretting trying to play God. He came to his senses to see what he is actually doing, which was going against nature.

Society lead Frankenstein’s creature to become a real monster. I think humans don’t like things that are different from them and that’s why they rejected the monster without even truly knowing and understanding that he just wanted to be part of the group. With everybody afraid of him, the monster became the real monster when he was frustrated about being born in a world all alone with nobody that accepts him.

  7. I believe Victor hated his creature because he feared responsibility. I don’t believe the consequences dawned on him until the creature actually had life. To consider what you made a monster not worthy of love, is easier than taking responsibility for the life you created and in a way fathering it. When the creature actually had life I think it all became too real for Victor and abandoning it was the easier choice, rather than giving the life he made the nurture it deserves. But when it comes down to it, i believe his hatred for creature is just a way to distance himself from it and avoid responsibility.

  8. Victor simply hates his creature due to his appearance. This is because in the noval, he asks “how can i describe my emotions at this castastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care i had endeavored to form? his limbs were in proportion and i had selected his features as beautiful . Beautiful!- great god! his yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and his teeth of pearly whiteness,”
Frankenstein became a real monster out of the treatment it received from the people. At first, the creatture tried to relate well to people although his creator had left him. The creator had left him. the creature helped people to collect firewood, he saved a drowning girl but the treatment he received from human being made him terrified and he went ahead to seek revenge for his awful treatment which made him real monster.

  9. I believe that Frankenstein felt threatened by his creation. The fact that he caught on and was able to be such a human and try to be understanding. He went out and grasp language and understand it from other people. His own creator didn’t want to show him love and acceptance. He was pushed to be evil.

  10. 1. Victor Frankenstein seems to be disgusted by his creation. He wanted to create another life, that looked and seemed human, but ended up creating a hideous monster that he was terrified by and he abandoned.

    2. I think the creature became a monster not because of how he looked, but because of the treatment he received from others. It’s important to have positive social interactions with other beings, and even though the creature was not “human,” he still had many human qualities and needed to be cared for.

    3. The creature wanted to die at the end because now that Victor was dead, he wanted to end his painful life as well. I think he wanted to stay alive for Victor, but without Victor, the creature was completely alone in the world.

  11. I think Victor hated his creature because he looked at it as an experiment that failed. What lead Frankenstein to become a real monster is the fact that he never experienced the love and care other people did. He wanted people to take him for him, but no one accepted him and in fact treated him like otherwise. He chose to die because he did not want to live anymore in a world where no one is accepting him and loving him, therefore its meaningless.

  12. I think that Frankenstein regrets his discovery and just wasn’t expecting his creation to become alive in the first place. Because he was so surprised that it worked and he came to live, he just abandoned it out of fear. He didn’t mean to make the monster feel like that, but just because he didn’t know what to do with it.
